Waves - The Art of the Electromagnetic Society
Drahtlose Kommunikation ist heute in allen Bereichen der Gesellschaft
selbstverständlich. Doch welcher Art sind die künstlerischen
Potentiale der uns heute überall und jederzeit umgebenden
elektromagnetischen Wellen? Was bewirken sie eventuell in unserer
Psyche? "Waves The Art of the Electromagnetic Society"
zeigt vom 10. Mai bis 29. Juni 2008 in der PHOENIX Halle Dortmund
rund 30 (medien)künstlerische Arbeiten von über 35
internationalen Künstlern, die elektromagnetische Wellen
als künstlerisches Material begreifen. Der Hartware MedienKunstVerein
Dortmund (HMKV) präsentiert "Waves" in Kooperation
mit dem bekannten Festival Ars Electronica in Linz und dem Medienkunstzentrum
RIXC aus Riga.
Die Ausstellung wird gezeigt im Rahmen des Festivals "scene:österreich
in nrw - 39. internationale kulturtage der stadt dortmund".
Neben der PHOENIX Halle werden im Rahmen von "Waves"
auch am Dortmunder U und im Stadtgarten Dortmund künstlerische
Projekte realisiert. Die Ausstellung in der 2.200 Quadratmeter
großen Halle des stillgelegten Stahlwerks "Phoenix-West"
wird ergänzt durch ein Filmprogramm, Workshops, Vorträge
und Führungen.

Wireless communication is, in this day and age, a
given in all realms of society. Yet what manner
of artistic potential is presented by the
electromagnetic waves perpetually enveloping us
today? And how might these influence our psyche?
From 10 May through 29 June 2008 the Hartware
MedienKunstVerein Dortmund (HMKV) is presenting -
in cooperation with the Ars Electronica, Linz
(European Capital of Culture 2009) and with RIXC,
Riga - the exhibition Waves - The Art of the
Electromagnetic Society in the PHOENIX Halle
Dortmund. Waves presents nearly 30 (media)
artworks that regard electromagnetic waves not
only as carriers of information but moreover as
artistic material. The exhibition treats
electromagnetic waves as the medium connecting
people, nature, and technology - giving rise
today to entirely new electromagnetic landscapes.

Filmavantgarde in Österreich - Programm 1
(1956-1985) beginnt bei den Ursprüngen in den
späten 1950er Jahren mit 16mm-Filmen von Peter
Kubelka und führt über einige Vertreter der
1960er zu wesentlichen Repräsentantinnen des
feministischen Kinos wie Valie Export und Mara
Mattuschka. Ein Programm von sixpackfilm, Wien.
17:45 - 19:00 Uhr
Filmavantgarde in Österreich - Programm 2
(1996-1998) zeigt eine Auswahl an 16mm-Filmen aus
den 90er Jahren, darunter Arbeiten von
FilmmacherInnen der sogenannten 3. Generation
(Dietmar Brehm, Gustav Deutsch und Lisl Ponger)
sowie zwei VertreterInnen der jüngsten Generation
(Thomas Draschan, Elke Groen). Dem überwiegenden
Teil der Filme gemeinsam ist die Arbeit mit
found-footage-Material. Ein Programm von

Manu Luksch: Faceless, 2007, 50 min.
Die österreichische Videokünstlerin Manu Luksch
ist über mehrere Jahre vor Überwachungskameras im
öffentlichen Raum Londons aufgetreten, hat sich
das Videomaterial bei den Betreiberfirmen der
Überwachungskameras besorgt und daraus einen
faszinierenden Spielfilm zusammengeschnitten ...
Absolut sehenswert!

Peter Weibel - Depiction is a crime - Video Works 1969-1975
Peter Weibels (frühe Arbeiten) (...) gehören in
die heroischen Jahre einer Aufbruchszeit, in
welcher in der Kunst noch alles möglich schien.
Allerdings trat der Künstler nicht allein als
Kritiker eines öffentlichen Mediums an, sondern
nahm die Gelegenheit war, um seine eigenen Themen
hervorzubringen... (Hans Belting)

VALIE EXPORT - 3 Experimental Short Films (1970 -
1984) + Unsichtbare Gegner (1976)
VALIE EXPORT ist eine der herausragenden
Künstlerinnen Österreichs und eine der
einflussreichsten Frauen der internationalen
Avantgarde. Das Oeuvre umfasst Performances,
Experimental- und Spielfilme, konzeptuelle
Fotografie, Zeichnungen, theoretische Texte,
Objekte und Installationen. In der
Auseinandersetzung mit feministischen Themen
spiegelt sich ihre Sensibilität für
gesellschaftliche Fragen wider. (Charim Galerie)

Martin Arnold - The Cineseizure
Hollywood-Filme sind Filme, die ausgrenzen,
reduzieren, ablehnen: repressives Kino. Hinter
dem, was dargestellt wird, versteckt sich immer
etwas, das nicht gezeigt wird. Genau das macht es
so interessant, sich damit zu beschäftigen.

Film avant-garde in Austria - Program 1
(1956-1985) starts with the origins in the late
1950s with 16mm films by Peter Kubelka, then
presents work by representatives of the 1960s and
finally leads to the most important
representatives of feminist cinema like VALIE
EXPORT and Mara Mattuschka. A film programme by
sixpackfilm, Vienna.

Film avant-garde in Austria - Program 2
(1996-1998) shows a selection of 16mm films from
the 1990s, among the works films by film
directors of the so called 'third generation'
(Dietmar Brehm, Gustav Deutsch and Lisl Ponger)
as well as two representatives of the youngest
generation (Thomas Draschan, Elke Groen). Most of
the films work with found footage. A film

Manu Luksch: Faceless, 2007, 50 min.
The Austrian video artist Manu Luksch has
performed, over several years, in front of video
surveillance cameras in London's public space.
She has then collected the footage showing her
image at the companies that runs the
videosurveillance camera systems and has edited a
fascinating feature film from the footage -- This
is an absolute must!

Austrian artist VALIE EXPORT has been an
influential and provocative figure on the
international art scene for over three decades.
Her practice includes film, video, photography,
text and performance. Initially expanding the
Actionist project to confront a complex feminist
critique of the social and political body, her
works achieve a compelling fusion of the visceral
