Puppen Körper Automaten

Phantasmen der Moderne

English version

DOLLS - BODIES - AUTOMATONS - the Phantasms of Modernism

The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen is currently preparing an exhibition devoted to a fascinating, though hitherto only fragmentarily treated phenomenon of 20th century art, that is to say, the depiction of dolls, automatons and other hybrid beings. The artists of classic modernism invented a whole diversity of anthropomorphous, synthetic figures and often mirrored themselves in technoid doppelgängers. Lay figures and marionettes, automatons and robots, manikins and dummies populate this artistic world of fantasy. Such hybrid and mechanomorphous beings appear with increasing frequency during times of crisis and in those movements of art which reject naturalistic depictions of the real world in favour of a synthetic world existing purely in the artist's imagination. Central to this exhibition, therefore, will be those composite figures which exist mid-way between nature and artefact, hybrid figures which thematize and reflect upon their roles in the context of artistic expression. Dolls, automatons and other hybrid beings must - and this is the idea behind the exhibition - be seen as an aesthetic 'borderline case' of modernism involving a self-referential interrogation of the realism behind the concepts of individual artistic media. Thus the exhibition opens perspectives up to the art of the present day; it may be seen not least as a contribution to our understanding of the history of what has become a central theme of contemporary art - the body and its various medial and visionary interpretations.

The planned exhibition PUPPEN KÖRPER AUTOMATEN - Phantasmen der Moderne will be the very first exhibition to illuminate the diversity of technoid transformations and reifications of the human body in the art of classic modernism. The entire spectrum ranges from the manichini of Pittura Metafisica through the hybrid collaged figures and grotesque dolls of the Dadaists to the technoid creations of the Constructivists and the manikins of the Surrealists. Whole exhibition rooms will be devoted to the erotic doll obsessions of Oskar Kokoschka and Hans Bellmer and the biomechanical figures of Oskar Schlemmer. The exhibition will also feature a section devoted to the enormous productivity of those artists who chose the medium of photography for this theme.

Responsible for the concept of the exhibition and the accompanying catalogue are Katharina Sykora, professor at the University of Bochum, and Pia Müller-Tamm, curator at the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen.
