Ankuendigung des "Demons in the Aether"-Workshops
des britischen Kuenstlers Martin Howse
zuzusenden, der im Rahmen unserer nächsten
Ausstellung - "Waves - the Art of the
Electromagnetic Society" stattfinden wird.
Der Workshop findet waehrend des
"Waves"-Eroeffnungswochenendes vom 9.-11. Mai
2008 in und ausserhalb der PHOENIX Halle Dortmund
statt.

Aether, oder Æther (Aiqhr, wahrscheinlich Aiqw,
ich brenne, obgleich Plato in seinem Kratylos den
Namen aus dessen fortwaehrender Bewegung ableitet
- oti aei qei peri ton aera rewn, aeiqehr dikaiwV
an kaloito), eine stoffliche Substanz von
feinerer Art als sichtbare Koerper, vermutlich in
jenen Bereichen des Raums vorhanden, die
scheinbar leer sind.

Waehrend der Maxwell City Workshop in Oslo
(Atelier Nord, 2007) ein breites Spektrum
aktueller Problematiken elektromagnetischer
Phaenomene untersuchte, strebt der
Nachfolgeworkshop "Demons in the Aether" aktive
Eingriffe in die geisterhafte elektromagnetische
Stadt an. Die spekulative Arbeit von James Clerk
Maxwell ist fuer beide Workshops wichtig: mit dem
Begriff der Entropie und somit der Oekologie
werden zwischen Physik und Informationstheorie
Bruecken geschlagen - ein deutlicher Uebergang
von der Thermodynamik in den digitalen Bereich.
Ebenso kann Maxwell, ausgehend von der Idee des
Aethers, als eine bedeutende Figur innerhalb der
heutigen Physik der Unschaerfe gesehen werden.
Die Begriffe "Signal" und "Rauschen" stellen
wesentliche Variablen innerhalb unserer
kuenstlerischen Gleichungen dar. Dabei werden die
Gleichungen Maxwells nochmals umgeschrieben, um
eine Architektur, die die (Un-)Sichtbarkeit und
Politik des Spektrums skizziert, zu entziffern.
Gleichzeitig dienen diese Stichworte als
Leitlinien fuer eine hauptsaechlich physische,
aktive Intervention; eine erneute Beschaeftigung
mit der Absichtlichkeit der Uebertragung.
Waehrend des dreitaegigen Workshops werden die
Teilnehmer - die Daemonen im Aether - in der
Stadt elektromagnetische Phaenomene untersuchen
und konstruieren, und eine fremdartige
Architektur von Emissionen erforschen und
produzieren. Fuer beide Zwecke werden einfache
Geraete gebaut, die zwischen der hoerbaren,
physischen Spur und dem Aether uebersetzen.

- Kurze Einfuehrung in elektromagnetische [EM]
Phaenomene, v. a. mittels Vorfuehrungen
[statische Elektrizitaet, Funkenuebertragung, Van
Eck Phreaking]
- Vergleich verschiedener Entwuerfe fuer EM
Sniffer und andere Untersuchungsgeraete im
Kontext des EM Spektrums
- Bau eines einfachen Hardware-basierten
Untersuchungsgeraetes durch die TeilnehmerInnen
- erste Feldstudien mit den selbst gebauten Untersuchungsgeraeten
in der Stadt
Samstag, 10. Mai 2008/Sonntag, 11. Mai 2008, jeweils 12:00
- 19:00 Uhr:
- Diskussion der Ergebnisse der ersten
Feldstudien. Bewertung des aufgenommenen
Materials.
- Konstruktion von und Experimentieren mit
einfachen Geraeten, die einen Eingriff in den EM
Raum erlauben (Breitbanduebertragung, Schaffung
magnetischer Felder). Untersuchung der Auswirkung
auf Materie.
- Zweite Feldstudie, bei der EM Architektur
untersucht wird (Verwendung von staedtischen bzw.
urbanen Materialien als Ad-Hoc Antennen)
- Abschliessende Diskussion und Entwurf weiterer kuenstlerischer
Arbeit.

material substance of more subtle kind than
visible bodies, supposed to exist in those parts
of space which are apparently empty.

Presenting a clear sequel to the Maxwell City
workshop in Oslo (Atelier Nord, 2007) which
investigated a broad spectrum of contemporary
concern with electromagnetic phenomena (EM),
Demons in the Aether attempts active intervention
into the ghosted EM city. The speculative work of
James Clerk Maxwell informs both workshops, with
the notion of entropy and thus ecology bridging
physics and information theory; a clear route
from thermodynamics into the digital domain.
Equally, under the sign of the aether, Maxwell
can well be considered as an essential figure
within a contemporary physics of uncertainty.
Notions of signal and noise offer clear variables
within our own artistic equations, rewriting
those of Maxwell, which attempt to make sense, to
decode an architecture sketching (in)visibility
and a politics of the spectrum. At the same time,
these watchwords provide a ready route into
primarily physical, active intervention; a
reworking of the intentionality of transmission.
Across three days workshop participants, the
demons in the aether, will both investigate and
construct city-wide EM phenomena, exploring and
producing an alien architecture of emissions.
Simple devices will be built in both instances,
translating between audible, physical trace and
the aether itself.
SCHEDULE

- Short introduction to electromagnetic [EM]
phenomena primarily through demonstration [static
electricity, spark transmission, Van Eck
phreaking]
- Comparison of a few designs for EM sniffer or
probe devices within the context of the EM
spectrum
- Construction by participants of the most simple hardware probe
device
- First city field trip with constructed probes
Saturday, May 10, 2008/Sunday, May 11, 2008, each day 12:00
- 19:00:
- Discussion of first field trip findings.
Interpretations of recorded material.
- Construction and experimentation with simple
devices allowing intervention into EM space
(wideband transmission, creation of magnetic
fields). Investigation of effects on matter.
- Second field trip investigating EM architecture
and investigation (use of city material as ad-hoc
antennas)
- Concluding discussion and projection for further artistic work.
