The Gift

The exhibition The Gift presents works by the Norwegian artists Marianne Heier and Jesper
Alvaer. Their works investigate strategies of exchange both as physical and mental transaction and as philosophical concept. What is the relation between give and take in the production of an exhibition? The Gift search to challenge the notion of exchange between the artist and the institution. Heier and Alvaer both work in the area of conceptual and relational art where social and personal interaction are central elements. They apply strategies of artistic research and production onto everyday life and often offers the artistic experience as a gift or service. The Gift will also include a commentary work by the Norwegian critic and artist Arve Roed, whose work often inhabits poignant institutional critique.

Marianne Heier´s project for the exhibition problematises Sparwasser´s specific profile and situation concerning the gallery´s physical state, its artistic position and social identity.
Her work discusses the role of the artist, the value of art and its ability to function directly rather than representatively. She seeks audience participation but demands nothing in return. On the contrary, she ends up offering art as a kind of service or gift and this tends to confront her recipients with a moral dilemma. The project consists of a performance on the opening night, an installation and a take away multiple series.

Jesper Alvaer´s project for Sparwasser, Logic of Exchange, is developed in relation to the work of
Marianne Heier. As a parasite work, it functions as an open departure from different possible aspects of exchange incorporated in Heier´s work. The project takes form as a series of four separate video talks, where selected contemporary thinkers mainly outside the field of contemporary art, is invited to talk about the topic of exchange - this without prior detailed knowledge of the exhibition context.

Die Ausstellung The Gift zeigt die Arbeiten der norwegischen Künstler Marianne Heier und Jesper Alvaer: Untersuchungen von Strategien des Austausches sowohl als physischer und mentaler
Übergänge wie auch als philosophisches Konzept. Was ist das Verhältnis zwischen Geben und Nehmen in der Errichtung einer Austellung? The Gift fördert den Austausch zwischen Kunstler und Institution. Beide Künstler arbeiten in einem Bereich zwischen konzeptioneller und relationeller Kunst, wobei soziale und persönliche Interaktion und Verhandlung zentrale Elemente sind. Sie (über)führen ihre
künstlerischen Untersuchungs- und Produktionsstrategien in den Alltag und bieten oft Kunsterfahrung als Geschenk oder Service an. The Gift beinhaltet auch eine kommentarische Arbeit von den Norwegischen Kritiker und Kunstler Arve Roed.

 

Marianne Heiers Projekt für die Ausstellung problematisiert Sparwassers spezifisches Profil und die physiche Ausgangssituation der Gallerie, ihre künstlerische Position und soziale
Identität. Ihre Arbeit diskuttiert die Rolle des Künstlers, den Wert der Kunst und ihre Fähigkeit, direkten Einfluss auszuüben als nur repräsentativ zu wirken. Sie sucht die Teilnahme des Publikums ohne etwas zurückzuverlangen. Eher im Gegenteil, ihre Kunstarbeit wird schlussendlich als einer Art Service oder Geschenk angeboten durch das sie dem Betrachter ein moralisches Dilemma
gegenübergestellt.
Das Projekt besteht aus eine Vorführung am Abend der Eröffnung, einer Installation und einer Serie von mehreren "take away´s".

 

Jesper Alvaers Projekt für Sparwasser, Die Logik vom Austausch, ist entwickelt im Relation von den Arbeiten von Marianne Heier. Als eine parasitische Arbeit ist sie Ausgangspunkt verschiedener möglicher Aspekte von Austausch, die in Heiers Arbeiten inkorporiert sind. Das Projekt besteht aus einer Serie von vier unabhängigen Video Talks, zu denen Denker, die hauptsächlich ausserhalb des Gebiets der Gegenwärtigen Kunst tätig sind, eingeladen wurden über das Thema Austausch zu sprechen - ohne detaillierte Vorkenntnisse über den Inhalt der Ausstellung zu haben.

The artist will present her past projects, and the developments of her new work.
