Die internationale Kunstausstellung the Urban Cultures of Global Prayers ermöglicht einen differenzierten Blick auf die Zusammenhänge zwischen urbaner Entwicklung und sakralen Praktiken, zwischen den Versprechen spiritueller Erlösung und sozialer Befreiung. Jenseits ideologischer Debatten um das Wiedererstarken der Religionen" wird in den Arbeiten von Künstler_innen aus zwölf Ländern deutlich, dass große Städte immer auch Orte religiöser Innovation sind. Die Schau thematisiert vor allem die kulturellen und städtischen Praktiken der weltweit agierenden, neuen religiösen Bewegungen. Erfahrbar werden urbane Settings, Strategien und Sinnproduktionen religiöser Akteure und Gemeinschaften in Metropolen des Globalen Südens wie Lagos, Mumbai oder Rio de Janeiro aber auch in Istanbul und Berlin. Der Schwerpunkt der Ausstellung liegt auf visuellen und medialen Formaten der Fotografie, Videoinstallation und des Soundscape. Kooperationspartner der Ausstellung ist Camera Austria im Anschluss an die Präsentation in der NGBK wird die Ausstellung in Graz zu sehen sein (27. Januar bis 31. März 2012).
Zur Ausstellungseröffnung am 11. November erscheint ein zweisprachiger Ausstellungsbegleiter (dt./engl).

The international art exhibition the Urban Cultures of Global Prayers offers a differentiated view of the interrelations between urban development and sacred practices, between promises of spiritual redemption and social liberation. Beyond ideological debates on the "regained strength of religiosity," it becomes evident in the works of the artists from twelve countries that big cities are also always places of religious innovation. The show particularly addresses the cultural and urban practices of globally active new religious movements, allowing viewers to experience the urban settings, strategies, and productions of meaning of religious players and communities in metropolises of the Global South such as Lagos, Mumbai, or Rio de Janeiro-but also in Istanbul and Berlin. The main emphasis of the exhibition is on the visual and media formats of photography, video installation, and soundscape. Cooperation partner for the exhibition is Camera Austria - following the presentation at the NGBK, the show will be on view in Graz (January 27 through March 31, 2012). Katalogpräsentation und Abschlussparty am 11.01.2012 um 19.00 Uhr Von 2009- 2011 realisierten 17 Künstler_innen insgesamt 12 Kunstprojekte im Berliner Untergrund: Vom U-Bahn-Geräusch-Chor, über Moderne Märchen im Berliner Untergrund bis hin zu einem Wanderführer im Loch Netz. Ausgehend von der geplanten, aber nie realisierten Berliner U- Bahnlinie U10, entwarfen die Künstler_innen Projekte, die sich mit dem Alltag, aber auch dem visionären Potential im Berliner Untergrund auseinandersetzten.
