Into the Unknown
Deimantas Narkevicius, Sarah Pierce, Mariana Silva und
Dmitry Gutov, João Dias, António Cunha Telles
Die Ausstellung Into the Unknown vereint Werke von Künstlern
und
Filmemachern, die Archive und historisches Filmmaterial produktiv
nutzen, um sie einer Neubetrachtung und Rekontextualisierung
zu
unterziehen. Die Arbeiten konzentrieren sich hierbei auf die
Frage,
wie sich diese bereits eingelagerten Bilderwelten heute lesen
und
interpretieren lassen. In den Händen der Künstler transformiert
sich
das Archiv in eine Reise in unbekanntes Terrain. Gleichzeitig
wird
das Archivmaterial aus heutiger Sicht und mit zeitgenössischem
Interesse neu konfiguriert. Auf paradoxe Weise vermittelt diese
von
den Künstlern aus den Archiven konstruierte Vergangenheit
eine
Präsenz, die mit der Gegenwart wetteifert und auf heute
relevante
Themen verweist.
Die im Ausstellungsraum Ludlow 38 und während der Veranstaltungen
im
Wyoming Building des Goethe Instituts gezeigten Werke eröffnen
Sichtweisen, die uns erlauben, die Vergangenheit und auch vergangene
Formen von Gemeinschaft neu zu entdecken und gleichzeitig Räume
für
mögliche Zukunftsszenarien zu entwerfen. Into the Unknown
beleuchtet
Themen wie soziale Aufbrüche, offizielle Darstellungen alltäglicher
Routine in gesellschaftspolitischen Konstellationen, die heute
so
nicht weiter existieren, die Auflösung politischer Systeme
und die
Beziehung des Individuums zur Gemeinschaft und dem kollektiven
Gedächtnis.
Der Ausstellungstitel ist der gleichnamigen Filmarbeit des
litauischen Künstlers Deimantas Narkevicius entliehen, die
den
Alltag in der ehemaligen DDR zeigt. Eingeladen, eine neue Arbeit
aus
dem Fundus des Archivs der ETV Sammlung für Sozialistische
Propagandafilme am Britischen Filminstitut in London zu entwickeln,
entschied sich Narkevicius, unterschiedliche Teile des Filmmaterials
so zu montieren, dass diese kinematografischen Repräsentationen
eines
ehemals real existierenden Sozialismus wieder ein existenzielles
Gewicht erhalten.
Die Arbeit von Mariana Silva, Archive for the Permanence of
Image,
Functional Model (2008), nimmt Archivmaterial im Super-8mm-Format
aus
der Zeit der Nelkenrevolution vom 25. April 1974 zum Ausgangspunkt.
Silva hat das Filmmaterial zu einer Installation zusammengeführt,
in
der die Filme auf Moviolas unter verschiedenen thematischen Aspekten
zugänglich gemacht werden. Zu sehen sind Bilder einer
Arbeiterdemonstration, die den São Bento Palast in Lissabon
belagert,
ein Sonntag, an dem Freiwillige Denkmäler putzen, sowie
separatistische Proteste von Einwohnern der Azoren.
Am 1. März 2010, am Abend vor Eröffnung der Ausstellung
bei Ludlow
38, findet im Wyoming Building des Goethe-Instituts eine Präsentation
der in Dublin lebenden amerikanischen Künstlerin Sarah Pierce
statt.
Ausgehend von ihrem Interesse an der Form des Gesprächs
wird es in
diesem Künstlergespräch um die Beziehung zwischen Künstlerin
und
Publikum gehen. Seit 2003 setzt Pierce den übergeordneten
Begriff
,The Metropolitan Complex' ein, um ihre künstlerische Arbeit,
die
Archive, Ausstellungen und Vorträge umfasst, zu beschreiben.
Diese
Strukturen werden zugleich durch Momente des Persönlichen
und
Zufälligen immer wieder aufgebrochen.
Filmvorführungen im Wyoming Building setzen die Ausstellung
an einem
weiteren Ort fort.
Dmitry Gutovs Film Lifshitz Institute (2004) reflektiert die
wechselhafte Rezeption der Person und der Schriften des marxistischen
Philosophen und Kunstkritikers Mikhail Lifshitz (19051983)
im
Verlauf des 20. Jahrhunderts in der Sowjetunion, in Russland
sowie im
Westen. Darüber hinaus zeigen wir zwei portugiesische Filme:
João
Dias' As Operações SAAL (2009) und António
Cunha Telles'
Continuar a Viver (1975) porträtieren beide das radikale
Experiment
partizipativer Architektur im Portugal der 1970er Jahre.

João Dias ist portugiesischer Filmemacher und Autor
von As
Operações SAAL, mit dem er 2009 auf dem Festival
DocLisboa den MIDAS
Preis gewann. Er ist der Regisseur von Dokumentarfilmen und einem
kurzem Kinofilm für die Tanzkompanie Clara Andermatt. Derzeit
bereitet er einen Dokumentarfilm über Tourismus im Süden
von
Portugal vor.
Zu den jüngsten Ausstellungen Dmitry Gutovs zählen
u. a. die Dritte
Moskau Biennale für zeitgenössische Kunst; documenta
12, Kassel;
Thaw: Russian Art. From Glasnost to the Present, Chelsea Art
Museum,
New York; 52. Biennale in Venedig sowie Repetition, Canon, Comeback,
Deceleration, Stupor, The State Tretyakov Gallery, Moskau. Er
lebt
und arbeitet in Moskau.
Deimantas Narkevicius' aktuelle Einzelausstellungen umfassen
Brandts Kunsthalle, Odense (2010); BFI Southbank Gallery, British
Film Institute, London; Kunsthalle Bern; Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven
(alle 2009) und Museo Nacional Centro De Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid
(2008). Er lebt und arbeitet in Vilnius.
Sarah Pierce ist eine von sechs Künstlerinnen, die eingeladen
wurden,
neue Arbeiten für die Holländische Plattform If I Can't
Dance I
Don't Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution zu entwickeln. It's
time
man. It feels imminent wurde 2008 am ICA in London gezeigt (mit
darauf folgenden Präsentationen bei de Appel Amsterdam und
FOUR in
Dublin); The question would be the answer to the question Are
you
happy? im Sala Rekalde, Bilbao 2009; An artwork in the third
person,
Project, Dublin 2009. 2005 vertrat sie Irland auf der 51ten Biennale
in Venedig.
Mariana Silva war eine der Gewinnerinnen des BES Revelação
Preises
(Serralves Museum, Porto, 2008) und ist derzeit auf einer
Künstlerresidenz im ISCP in Brooklyn, NY. Ihr Artikel The
Escape
Route's Design (mit Pedro Neves Marques) wurde im Mai 2009 im
e-flux
journal veröffentlicht.
António Cunha Telles ist ein portugiesischer Filmemacher
und
Produzent mit einer großen Anzahl an Produktionen seit
den frühen
1960er Jahren.

Into the Unknown brings together works by artists and filmmakers
who
reflect upon and make productive use of archival film footage
and
other material from the past. The works focus on how such stored
images are received and interpreted today, not just on the
circumstances in which they were once produced. In their hands
the
archive becomes a journey into unknown territories, but at the
same
time it is always reconfigured according to today's interests
and
perspectives. Paradoxically, the constructed past that these
artists
excavate from the archive radiates a presence rivaling that of
the
present moment. The works presented in the gallery at Ludlow
38 and
during screenings at the Goethe-Institut's Wyoming Building open
up
new pockets of time that allow us to observe the past, and the
communities that lived in it, at our own leisure. At the same
time
they set up spaces for future agency. The exhibition encompasses
topics such as social uprising, official versions of everyday
routines, the disappearance of political systems and the
individual's relationship to society and to collective memory.
The show borrows its title from Lithuanian artist Deimantas
Narkevicius's latest film Into the Unknown (2009), which depicts
everyday life in the German Democratic Republic. When commissioned
to
produce a new piece from the National Archive's ETV Collection
of
socialist propaganda films at the British Film Institute, Narkevicius
decided to re-edit different clips of existing films and sounds,
thus
restoring existential weight to these cinematic representations
of
really existing socialism.
Also shown in the gallery at Ludlow 38, Mariana Silva's Archive
for
the Permanence of Image, Functional Model (2008) takes as a starting
point Super 8mm footage from the time of the Carnation Revolution
of
April 25, 1974, culled from archives in her native Portugal.
Silva
has reworked the films into an installation that comprises various
material presented on moviolas: a demonstration of construction
workers besieging Lisbon's São Bento palace, a Sunday
of volunteer
work cleaning of public monuments, separatist protests by inhabitants
of the Azores islands.
On March 1, the evening before the exhibition opens at Ludlow
38,
Dublin-based American artist Sarah Pierce will give an artist
talk at
the Goethe-Institut's Wyoming Building. The presentation will
look
at the relation between performer and audience and deals with
the
artist's interest in conversations. Since 2003 Pierce has used
an
umbrella term, The Metropolitan Complex, to describe her practice
which uses archives, exhibitions and papers - often opening these
structures up to the personal and the incidental.
Film screenings at the Wyoming Building continue the exhibition
off-
site. They include Russian artist Dmitry Gutov's film Lifshitz
Institute (2004) about the Marxist art critic Mikhail Lifshitz
and
the contradictory reception of his writings in the Soviet Union
and
post-Soviet Russia as well as in the West throughout the 20th
century. Also featured are two Portuguese films, João
Dias's As
Operações SAAL (2009) and António Cunha
Telles's Continuar a
Viver (1975), portraying the unique efforts of a radical experiment
in participatory architecture in Portugal.

João Dias is a Portuguese film director and the author
of As
Operações SAAL, which won the MIDAS prize at DocLisboa
2009. He is
the author of documentaries and a short fiction film for Dance
Company Clara Andermatt and is currently preparing a documentary
on
tourism in the south of Portugal.
Dmitry Gutov's recent exhibitions include the Third Moscow
Biennale
of contemporary art, Moscow; documenta 12, Kassel, Germany; Thaw:
Russian Art. From Glasnost to the Present, Chelsea Art Museum,
New
York; La 52 Biennale di Venezia, Venice; Repetition, Canon, Comeback,
Deceleration, Stupor, The State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow. He

and FOUR Dublin); The question would be the answer to the question
Are you happy?, Sala Rekalde, Bilbao 2009; An artwork in the
third
person, Project, Dublin 2009. In 2005 she represented Ireland
at the
51st Venice Biennale.
Mariana Silva was one of the winners of BES Revelação
prize
(Serralves Museum, Porto, 2008) and is currently on a residency
at
ISCP in Brooklyn, NY. Her article The Escape Route's Design (with
Pedro Neves Marques) was published by e-flux journal in May 2009.
António Cunha Telles is a Portuguese film director
and producer with
a large number of productions since the early 1960's.
